This image shows the sort of crowds that the electro mechanical Julius Tote systems had to contend with. It is of the Wellington Racing Club's Trentham Racecourse in New Zealand. The writing on the back of the photograph reads: Wgton Racing Club 1st day Spring Meeting Oct. 1936. New Totalisator. This new totalisator was an upgraded Julius tote which commenced operation that same year.
The Secretary of the Wellington Racing Club writes about the Club's first Julius totalisator after it has been in operation for two years. The first Julius tote at Trentham was installed in 1920:
The Automatic Totalisator installed at Trentham has been severely tested during the last two years. The turnover has been exceptionally heavy, on one occasion 102,000 pounds being invested on eight races. It is safe to say that the public are well served, better than ever before, and they in common with the executive of the Club are satisfied that the machine is the best on the market at the present time.
