This history page contains a photograph, which is one of several belonging to the photo gallery pages, which are part of several pages relating to the invention of the world's first automatic totalizator in 1913 and Automatic Totalisators Limited, the Australian company founded in 1917 to develop manufacture and export these systems.
Hialeah Stand where Julius Tote is operating
This is the stand at the Hialeah racetrack in Miami where the first Automatic Totalisators Limited system was installed in America in 1932. The Julius tote is in operation in this photograph and the punters can be seen on both floors of the stand queued up purchasing tickets at the windows where the Ticket Issuing Machines (TIMs) of this system are in operation. This system had 110 TIMs. It looks like this photo was taken from the top of the indicators on the Tote House with the Julius Tote Barometer Indicators attached to it. This Tote House can be seen in the fourth photograph of the Hialeah Racetrack in Miami 1932 section of the Photo Gallery. Following is a National Library of Australia Trove newspaper archive article from the Daily Mercury, which mentions the Hialeah Julius Tote installation in the second paragraph. It is interesting to note that now as I am adding this article to this page in the third decade of the second millennium, the Australian Pines mentioned in the first paragraph of the article, are outlawed in parts of Florida.

HIEALEAH RACE TKACK.
MOST BEAUTIFUL IN WORLD.
(Australian Cable Service).
MIAMI (Florida)- Jan. 12.- When Joseph Widener opens the Hialeah race track on Thursday, it will not only be one of the world's most beautiful, but it will have a patch of Australia in this monument to horse racing, with a magnificent paddock. A gorgeous club house and marvellous landscaping are provided with a background of 800 Australian pines which circle the outside of the course, while 8500 smaller Australian pines have been planted for hedges.
For the first time in America the Australian totalizator will be used at the track for betting. It is believed to be more accurate and more honest than the Parimutual system in vogue under the Florida law legalising betting.
