This history page contains a photograph, which is one of several belonging to the photo gallery pages, which are part of several pages relating to the invention of the world's first automatic totalizator by George Julius in 1913 and the company he founded, Automatic Totalisators Limited, to develop, manufacture and export these systems.
Queues Hialeah Stand Julius Tote operating
This is an image of the queues on the first floor of the stand at the Hialeah racetrack in Miami where the first Automatic Totalisators Limited's system was installed in America in 1932. The Julius tote is in operation and the punters can be seen queued up purchasing tickets at the windows where the Ticket Issuing Machines (TIMs) of this system are in operation. This system had 110 TIMs. Through the upper section of the second archway from the right hand edge of the photo the Julius Tote barometer odds indicators can be seen. These indicators are attached to a Tote House building. In the Julius Tote installations I have seen, the tote house containing the main barometer indicator like this one, housed the Julius Tote machine room. This is not necessarily the case as these systems did support remote indicators. If the machine room is not in the distant Tote House, it could be in the stand or some other Tote dedicated building on the course. More selling windows can be seen on the ground floor level of the Tote House building visible in this image although some of these windows are dedicated to dividend payment. An image of this Tote House can be seen in the fourth photograph of the Hialeah Racetrack in Miami 1932 section of the Photo Gallery. Two short newspaper articles relating to the Hialeah Julius Tote are included below the image.

A DIFFERENCE
AMERICA AND AUSTRALIA
In Australia Sir George Julius is a K.B.E. In America he is a Knight of the British Empire in large type.
Thus does the "Miami Herald" describe "the inventor of the tote" in a current issue, which seems to be a special totalisator number.
At any rate, the machine has been installed at Hialeah Park, Miami, and is the subject of much congratulation, with Mr. L. L. Raymond, the manager of Automatic Totalisators, Ltd., in the limelight.
Our contemporary expresses the opinion that horse racing in Australia is a sport, and never a business, as in America.

USE THE JULUS TOTE
Hialeah Park (Miami, Florida) attendances do not average much more than 8000 a day but those who patronise the meetings bet rather well. For the first 21 days of the 45 days' fixture that commenced in January the totalisator turnover was 5,315,907 dollars (approximately £1,063,180), over £50,000 a day, and about £376,420 ahead of the corresponding period a year ago. At Hialeah Park there is an up-to-date Julius tote.

There is a video clip titled "Opening Day Hialeah Park 1932" in the Video Clips chapter of this website, which has short segments showing the Julius Tote at Hialeah in operation. To see this video clip, click on the image above then scroll to the bottom of the loaded page and select Go to the index navigation bar option. Next select the Video clips of a working Julius tote Chapter in the Thirdly section of the index. The video clip thumbnail is titled hialeah1932.wmv (18.3Mb)Opening Day Hialeah Park 1932. The queues in the image above can be seen in this video, as well as the operation of one of the TIMs that are used at every one of the tote selling windows at Hialeah. There is a good view of the Julius Tote Raceday Control Panel being used that is installed at the totalisator operations centre of the racetrack to control the operation of the Julius Tote Mainframe.
